Katy Perry On Motherhood, Orlando Bloom And Building Resilience

Forget buying anything for Katy Perry for Christmas because she’s got everything she needs.

‘[Daisy] is the greatest gift I’ve ever received,’ the singer says matter-of-factly, referring to her four-month-old daughter. ‘I think what children do, in general, is teach you that all you need is love.’

It seems fitting that Perry is referencing a line from Love Actually just days before Christmas. The 36-year-old is calling from her home in Los Angeles, which she shares with her baby, Daisy Dove, and fiancé, actor Orlando Bloom. Whether it’s her laidback demeanour (she’s sat crossed legged in front of a fireplace wearing a bright yellow hoodie) or beaming smile when discussing becoming a first time mum, you can’t help but sense the singer is embracing time at home with loved ones wholeheartedly amid the ongoing global trauma of the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s certainly been a year of change for the Californian-born star. In March, the singer announced she was pregnant with her first child in the music video of her single ‘Never Wore White’. Teasing a clip of the video, which sees her dressed in white cradling her baby bump, Perry tweeted to her ‘Katy Kats’: ‘Let’s just say it’s gonna be a jam packed summer…[sic].’

While the pandemic forced many of us into home offices and saw others put on furlough, Perry seemingly worked right up to the day she gave birth, filming music videos, keeping us entertained with viral posts on Instagram and releasing her sixth studio album SMILE. For someone with their foot planted firmly on the pedal, such dedication to her fans is testament to her incomparable work ethic. Since becoming a mother, however, Perry says she’s had to recalibrate her priorities.
